Ultra Violet 2018
Ultra Violet in 2018? That sounds pretty dreamy in our book! In case you haven't heard, Pantone's color of the year is indeed Ultra Violet and we are taking this moment to show you ways to use similar violet hues - on your walls, fireplace, floor, furniture, and accessories.
I'm not going to lie, a colleague posed the question asking if Ultra Violet was really a wall-worthy color, or just accessories. Taken right off the chip and put onto a wall? NOPE, probably not. But creativity is all about interpretation, right?
First up is our Colorful Condo project above. The clients already had a gray sofa and yellow accents happening. We decided to make the focal point, the fireplace, Benjamin Moore Grape Juice, and it did not disappoint! We repeated it in their master bathroom, pictured above as well. In case you missed it, we spilled our guts on our favorite color secrets for Apartment Therapy here!
In our Moody Decor & Details project, we used a few shades of violet - the velvet plumb chair, Benjamin Moore's Autumn Purple on the back of the shelves/fireplace wall, and a throw pillow that was a bit in between to make it all flow! The variety of purple hues work here because they are grounded by a repeating pallete of black, white and green/gray.
Last, but not least, our First Floor Decor project pairs a rich navy sofa with an equally rich eggplant and pink toned rug with the same shades in the pillows. The light walls and airy curtains keep it from feeling to heavy or serious. If adding a deep aubergine, eggplant, or wine-colored hue on your walls feels too risky, A.) remember it's just paint or B.) consider textiles!
Here are a few of our favorites mentioned above and other shades of bright and muted violets that would be fun to try. And time for a few favorite inspiration photos:
LOVE the sofa here mixed with other violet tones.
I'm a big fan of unexpected color in a kitchen! The muted lavender blends with the other neutrals and I love the pairing with the bright chair.
White walls are the perfect backdrop for all the other purple happening here. Again - safe bet - textiles and accessories.
And I would absolutely paint a full room and trim in this same gorgeous matte purple. Definitely not ultra violet, but still purpley delicious.
It's worth noting that Benjamin Moore's 2018 Color of the Year is Caliente, a sizzling red, which we like in doses, but aren't running out to lacquer our walls just yet. Hmmm, maybe a ceiling though? Sherwin Williams chose Oceanside for 2018 a jewel-toned blue-green and that's something we can get behind in large and small doses. Which one is your favorite?
